Benefitting neurological patients in Southampton

The Wessex Neurological Centre at University Hospital Southampton provides treatment for disorders affecting the brain, spine, and nerves. As a specialist centre, it serves a population of three million from across the south and the Channel Islands.

As a charity, we think it is crucial to provide this support for the benefit of our neurological patients. Often patients are admitted through emergency cases and so don’t have the chance to bring anything with them into hospital.

That’s why the charity has funded individual patient wash bags across the department. These include a wash bag, moisturiser, handcream, shampoo, shower gel, soap, toothbrush, and toothpaste. These have proved very popular with our patients.

Some of the most common conditions include epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and stroke.

A few diseases cause hand tremors, so to help our patients to keep their independence, we’ve funded special cutlery and adaptive hand mobility aids so patients can eat their meals without additional help.

Here are some of the other items we’ve funded for the centre over the summer:

  • Bed fans to keep patients cool
  • DAB radios offer a distraction for patients, and keep them connected to life outside the hospital
  • Lockable notes trolley
  • Puzzles, pop-its, and other small rehabilitation items to provide a distraction, and allow patients to work on their dexterity between therapy sessions
  • Foldable stools for staff
  • Microwaves and toasters
  • Coffee machines and pods for staff
