Working with our Research and Development team, we’re funding research projects with seed funding which will lead our clinicians and researchers to be able to prove their hypothesis and unlock further external funding.

We’re proud to be working alongside Southampton Hospitals Charity to help fund vital research projects that enable us to remain at the forefront of medical care. Clinical research trials and studies are part of everyday life in the NHS, and you might not know it, but most care that patients receive in hospitals and GP practices is the result of research.

There are hundreds of studies being led at any one time in Southampton. We are constantly striving to improve current treatments and medicines, and develop new and better ones for the future.” – Dr Karen Underwood, Director of Research & Development at University Hospital Southampton.

Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy Research

Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) is a serious birth complication which affects 1 in 1,000 babies in the UK each year.

The impact of neonatal brain injury on families is not widely understood and literature on the psychological effects is scarce. The expert research team at University Hospital Southampton want to change this, and are looking for funding that will build a thorough understanding of the challenges and perceptions of parents, so that healthcare professionals can better support families of, and patients with, HIE.

With your support, we can provide families with the help they need, and make sure they aren’t facing an HIE diagnosis alone.

Neonatal Family Support Research

We want to understand the impact of being transferred to our Southampton neonatal intensive care from other hospitals across the south coast.

This project will ask two simple questions: What are the burdens on the families of sick babies transferred for neonatal care from other hospitals, and how can these families be supported?

You can help fund vital research so that we can better support families with babies admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Young People’s Cancer Research

Teenagers and young adults (TYAs) often describe feeling unprepared for life beyond cancer treatment and experience fear and uncertainty. They are often left with questions about how their long-term health will be affected.

This project will work with young people to identify the key areas where support is needed, how they would like this support to be delivered, and when the support is needed.

You can help fund vital research to gather knowledge and resources to help young cancer patients.

How we’ve impacted the hospital

  • We’ve funded ground-breaking research into using artificial intelligence as an early warning system for patient deterioration. This takes available patient data and harnesses machine learning to save lives.
  • We helped fund the development of respirator hoods for our frontline healthcare workers and support staff to use with Covid+ patients.
  • We funded research into amblyopia (lazy eye) conditions in children.
